The esports tournament will feature 64 schools and 480 esports athletes from across the country competing in Overwatch® (the Overwatch Collegiate Esports Commissioners Cup), Rocket League, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, Valorant and NBA 2K. As various season playoffs and qualifier events continue across the nation, multiple participating conferences already include ECAC, NECC, NJCAAE, ECC and Peach Belt, among others. In all, up to twenty conferences will receive bids for their winning teams to be announced in the coming weeks during the CECC “Selection Show”.

“This event will feature the most diverse and inclusive list of endemic organizations, conference partners, schools and sponsors participating in the premiere event in the history of collegiate esports,” said Angela Bernhard Thomas, EVP of ESPORTSU at CSMG. “To have this many stakeholders who share a common vision for creating a framework for the growth and sustainability of collegiate esports programs and the industry as a whole points to the importance of this event.”

CECC serves as more of a homecoming celebration of gaming rather than a stand-alone esports tournament, and will give attendees a unique festival experience featuring food trucks, live music, a career fair, professional networking, a cosplay costume contest and interactive onsite activations. CECC provides collegiate esports athletes, fans and academic institutions an annual platform for competition, career opportunity, and community.

“What March was for college basketball, May is for college esports!”, said Todd Harris, CEO of Skillshot Media.  “Collegiate Esports is on the rise in the eyes of the general public, game publishers, distribution networks, sponsors and pro-team owners, as well as the universities themselves.  With this year’s CECC, the nation’s top collegiate esports programs come together to compete across the most popular games.”

Hi-Rez Studios Co-Founder Completes Management Buy-Out of Skillshot Media and will Strategically Partner with INAP to Develop an Esports Media Center in Downtown Atlanta
Skillshot Media
,
April 17, 2024
The new 10,000 square foot esports operations, production and broadcast center will service multiple game publishers as well as consumer brand partners.

Skillshot Media, the esports entity formerly owned by Alpharetta-based game publisher Hi-Rez Studios, announced today the completion of a management buy-out by two former Hi-Rez executives. Skillshot will operate as an independent, publisher-agnostic esports solution provider and agency, and Hi-Rez Studios no longer has an ownership interest in the company.

Hi-Rez Studios Co-founder Todd Harris and former Vice President Nabil Ismail will exit Hi-Rez and serve as CEO and COO of Skillshot Media, and in strategic partnership with INAP will develop an esports operations center and production studio in downtown Atlanta.  This new Esports Media Center, operated by Skillshot, will be located at 250 Williams Street NW in Atlanta, co-located within INAP’s flagship Atlanta data center facility.

“With 15 years in game development and marketing, we have seen first-hand how a community-driven esports approach delivers results for both the game publisher and brand partners,'' said Todd Harris, CEO of Skillshot Media. “Players who watch esports are more engaged and spend more money with the game publisher. Those players also have higher spending and goodwill toward partners who authentically support esports events. We believe brands that want to reach the next generation of consumers will discover esports to be the most effective and efficient way to connect with that massive audience, and Skillshot wants to help them do exactly that.”

INAP’s flagship Atlanta data center features low latency network performance enabled by patented route optimization technology and an onsight network operations center to keep game server and broadcasting infrastructure operational and at peak efficiency.

“Gaming and esports is not only the largest entertainment industry but one of the most demanding in terms of performance,” said TJ Waldorf, CMO at INAP. “INAP is proud to have powered esports communities for over a decade, and this strategic partnership with Skillshot allows us to even better serve the fast growing gaming and esports industry.”

Continues Harris, “Esports demands an IT infrastructure built for speed, reliability, and global scalability.  Players are competing for millions of dollars and INAP delivers the performance required for that competitive environment. This Esports Media Center is walking distance to the Georgia World Congress Center, State Farm Arena, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and public transportation to the world’s busiest airport, allowing us to easily integrate with other Atlanta venues and hospitality partners for esports events.”

Skillshot Partners with Johnson STEM Activity Center and Former NFL Players to Open Atlanta’s Newest Esports Arena
Skillshot Media

April 17, 2024

As part of a multi-organization collaboration, Skillshot Media, Johnson STEM Activity Center, The Forever Young Foundation, and Atlanta Public Schools established an esports arena as an extension of the Johnson STEM Activity Center’s operations. The esports arena will be a free resource to students who want to compete in the inaugural season of varsity esports programs in the state of Georgia.

“Skillshot seeks to foster community via esports,” said Todd Harris, President of Skillshot Media.
“Esports cultivates discipline, teamwork and good sportsmanship as well as STEM skill development. This new venue and partnership will greatly expand access to the local community.”

8 to 80 zones are a collaboration between NFL Hall of Fame Quarterback and Founder of the Forever Young Foundation Steve Young and former NFL player Jerry Rice. This service provides youth in underserved communities the skills they need to pursue careers in technology and media.

“Jerry and I continually seek to reach the youth we serve ‘where they are’,” said Steve Young. “We want to stimulate their minds and creativity by utilizing platforms they are already passionate about.”

Skillshot Media provided technological and infrastructural direction in constructing the 3,500 square-feet addition to the Johnson Stem Activity Center. The esports arena is a state-of-the-art facility that allows students to hone their skills as they compete in season one of the Georgia High School varsity esports program. Teams from around the metro area will be transported from their school to the arena at no charge.

“Not every school has the financial resources to support an esports team,” said Dr. Lonnie Johnson, Atlanta inventor and Founder of the Johnson STEM Activity Center. “Our arena will level the playing field and allow anyone with the desire to compete to play for a state championship.”

In addition, the space is a classroom that provides students with hands-on training in broadcast production, online streaming, audio engineering, video editing, and game development.
